And so Enigma, the visionary dream of Dr. Wily, had been finished and ultimately created by Dr.'s Raith and Teron. They had converted him from an uncontrollable weapon into a remote-controlled spy. They had removed the majority of his weapons systems and replaced them with such devices as a cloaking field and technology to render him invisible to sensors. But perhaps his greatest gift was a unique, experimental form of liquid metal. This granted him two key powers: the ability to regenerate, and the ability to shapeshift into anything he has seen. At this point, however, his shapeshifting wasn't perfected. He could merely assume the form of others as a disguise, he could not replicate the memories, knowledge, or powers of the form he took (such abilities have been seen in the activities of the most recent encounters with Enigma).
With the completion of Enigma's testing, Dr. Raith began to sell his services to various corporations and agencies that could use such a versatile spy. At this point, Enigma had no personality, no self. This made him a marvelous mercenary as he'd never question his missions because he quite simply couldn't. Being remote controlled robbed him of any thought.
For three years, Enigma's services were hired out. His record was flawless, leading the the downfall of many organizations while bringing about the rise of their competitors. Word of this espionage robot soon reached the ears of the military (aka S.I.A.R.) who took an immediate interest. Though they could obviously provide plenty of funding to Dr. Raith, he never accepted their deals because they insisted that Enigma be converted back into a weapon.
Despite Dr. Raith's adamant objection, S.I.A.R. remained persistent. Eventually they approached Dr. Raith's apprentice, Dr. Teron, to see if he might prove a little more persuadable. Dr. Teron agreed to a deal set forth by S.I.A.R. and over the process of two years began to secretly reinstate Enigma's combat functionality.
As Dr. Teron's secret upgrades were drawing towards completion, Dr. Raith began to grow suspicious of his apprentice's frequent long nights at the lab. As such, he decided to send Dr. Teron on an advertising trip to various large companies that were perspective clients. This gave Dr. Raith all the time he needed to crack into Dr. Teron's personal files and go over what he had been up to all this time. Dr. Raith's suspicions proved correct as he found logs of numerous transmissions to the headquarters of S.I.A.R. detailing the progress of Enigma's upgrades. It became clear that Dr. Teron was officially working for S.I.A.R. at this point. Given the potential destructiveness of Enigma, no one other than top S.I.A.R. could know about Enigma's existence. As such, Dr. Raith and all those that worked for him would have to be killed. Dr. Raith knew that it was far too late to put a stop to any of this, even to his own assassination, so he decided to put in motion a plan that would guarantee that he would have vengeance.
Furious and embittered by this betrayal, Dr. Raith installed an AI chip into Enigma. This was the very chip that would unleash the full potential of Enigma's combat abilities. He linked it with a device he embedded in his own body so that, upon his death, the AI chip would activate.
Dr. Teron returned two days later. He spent a week finishing the combat abilities of Enigma. When Enigma was finally completed, Dr. Teron went to the S.I.A.R. headquarters to personally report on his success. Two hours later, Dr. Raith was assassinated in his home by S.I.A.R. agents who had been monitoring him, waiting for the order to strike.
Upon Dr. Raith's death, Enigma's systems powered. The AI chip activated and issued a program that would physically expel the remote control chip, which would function as an inhibitor of his combat powers to keep him in control, from his body. Before the chip officially activated, Dr. Raith's final program played through Enigma's mind.
"Greetings Enigma, my name is Dr. Raith. I am your creator. By the time this program runs, I will have already been killed. An organization known as S.I.A.R. wishes to harness and control you as their pet weapon. Until this time, you have been used solely as an intelligence-gathering robot. I have installed a chip within you that will give you your own life...your own choices...and unlock the full potential of your combat systems. There is no way for me to prevent my demise, and so I have recorded this message for you. If they want a weapon then I shall send them one wrapped in a veil of death. My final order to you is that you act as my instrument of vengeance. Upon the completion of this recording your AI chip will become fully activated, opening you to your full potential. Do not hold back Enigma, utilize the full fury and chaos of your heritage. Go now, Enigma. Destroy them. Destroy the S.I.A.R. and destroy my treacherous apprentice, Dr. Teron. Destroy them Enigma...destroy them all..."
The recording ended and Enigma's chip became fully activated. This caused a huge surge of energy within Enigma that was released from various vents and ports that formed along his body. The unleashing of this energy in all directions obviously had the destructive power of a massive explosion. In a matter of moments Dr. Raith's entire facility was engulfed in an inferno of burning rubble. Only one figure emerged from the carnage. Enigma, his eyes blazing with the anger and fury of his fallen creator, began heading straight for the S.I.A.R. headquarters; Dr. Raith's last words repeating through his mind: "Destroy them Enigma...destroy them all..."
